Celebrating International Women's Day is a tradition with Flo & Iana. I don't always make it, but this year we started to go to Upstate in the east village and moved to a Filipino restaurant when it wasn't feasible to wait for two hours for a table.
It was fun to order for everyone, explain the food and sauces, guide them on a tour through food that I grew up eating.
Appetizers: Chincheron (fried chicken skin), Sisig (pig ears, snout and belly with a fried egg and garlic rice)
and Spam Fries (beer battered spam with banana ketchup).
Mains: Ginataang Prawns (large prawns braised in coconut milk & grilled pinapple), Kare Kare (oxtails braised in peanut butter with long beans, bok choy, roasted eggplant), Pancit Bihon (rice vermicelli noodles w/ braised chicken, warm carrot & celery salad, glazed water chestnuts & poached egg), with sides of garlic rice and grilled bok choy.
Dessert: Maja Blanca (coconut pudding with jackfruit and corn)... 6 spoons.
